"Αεί ο Θεός ο Μέγας γεωμετρεί" Πλάτων (427 π.Χ. – 347 π.Χ.)

Emblem

The HMGS emblem displays the basic measuring instruments such as the theodolite, the triangle, the angle quadrant and the compass, the owl as the symbol of knowledge and Greece inside the globe as the symbol of the area of the Service’s cartographic responsibility.

The two laurel branches that embrace the above images represent the HMGS’ fights for the Homeland and the Nation as well as its fatalities of the battles fought by the Hellenic Army.

Over and above the emblem the famous Plato proverb “Eternally does God the Great geometrize” is displayed, which is HMGS proverb. It demonstrates the importance of cartography for humanity, being by itself a mnemonic code since the letter number (of the ancient Greek proverb, points to the respective figure of the number Pi, approximating five (5) decimal digits (3,14159) : “Αεί = 3, ο = 1, Θεός = 4, ο =1, μέγας = 5, γεωμετρεί = 9”.

Αεί = 3, ο = 1, Θεός = 4, ο =1, μέγας = 5, γεωμετρεί = 9
